#BWLuckyDog: Sahara

Meet Sahara!

Our #BWLuckyDog this week is Sahara, from Greater Charlotte SPCA!

Meet this week’s pup! Sahara from Greater Charlotte SPCA: Sahara is a 12 week old black beauty with a white chest. She’s a boxer, terrier mix with possible lab. Sahara has been potty trained for at least 3 weeks and no accidents (good girl!).  She hasn’t met a stranger! Her sweet demeanor and young spirit lets her play well with other dogs and cats, and does well with children of all ages. Sahara can also settle down and play by herself chewing a bone or a squeaky toy. As much as she loves walks, she is also down for some cuddles.

#BWLuckyDog: Rocky

Meet Rocky!

Our fifth #BWLuckyDog is Rocky, from Lucky Labs Rescue!

Meet this week’s pup! Rocky from Lucky Labs: Rocky is a lab-mix stray that was rescued from a very small shelter in SC. He is only about a year old and is still very much a puppy!  Rocky is fully house trained and loves to play.  He gets along with his foster lab sister and all the furry friends at doggy day care.  Rocky needs a family that will love him and give him lots of attention.  He is very smart and needs to be kept busy, either playing with another dog his age or with an active human that will take him for walks everyday or the doggy park, or even to work with you!  Rocky goes in the crate during the day when we leave, but not at night.  He loves to be with his people when they are home and will snuggle beside you on the couch or by your feet at night. As active as Rocky is during the day, he is just as ready to sleep at night – and sleeps straight thru the night! Rocky will be an awesome dog for a family willing to take the time to play with him.

For more information on or a chance to meet Rocky, please email Lucky Labs Rescue at llradoptions@gmail.com or llrcharlotte@gmail.com.

#BWLuckyDog: Repa

Meet Repa!

Our fourth #BWLuckyDog is Repa, from Long Trails to Happy Tails Rescue!

Repa was found in the backseat of a repossessed car. The car she was in was towed to the lot, and left for THREE days before any pictures were taken of the car. When they opened the back door, they found Repa sitting there on the seat. She is truly a miracle too, because she was left in the car during days that the temperature was above 75 degrees each day. Repa is almost 4 months old, crate and potty trained, and she’s learning basic commands. Repa loves dogs, cats, and kids of all shapes and sizes, and is just a great girl! She is truly our miracle baby, and we couldn’t be happier to feature her story through your campaign!

For more information on or a chance to meet Repa, please email Long Trails to Happy Tails Rescue at longtrailshappytails@gmail.com.

#BWLuckyDog: Gidget

Meet Gidget!

Our third #BWLuckyDog is Gidget, from Carolina Big Hearts Big Barks!

Gidget is the perfect combination of silly and sweet all rolled up into one. Gidget is a boxer/pit bull mix who is approximately 2 years old, smaller in size at only 35 pounds and still looking for her forever home. She is completely house broken, crate trained and 100% love bug! She is either entertaining her foster parents with her silly antics or curled up in a ball cuddling. Gidget spends most of her day playing with her four legged foster brothers. She does great with other dogs of all sizes and cats, once given an opportunity to learn they don’t want to hurt her. Gidget was rescued from a shelter after being held as evidence in an animal cruelty case. When she came into rescue she was a scared little girl who has blossomed and discovered it is ok to trust, love and have fun. Now all Gidget needs is the happily ever after she deserves.

He’s good with other dogs and loves to run and play fetch. He already knows sit and stay and his foster mom says he is a quick learner. He is doing well with house and crate training. He loves to go for walks and does great with his easy walk harness. He would make a wonderful companion for someone with a active lifestyle or fenced in yard. The Wednesday Social: 5 Ways to Ruin Your Reputation on Social Media

Well hello, Wednesday!

Every week wediscuss a trending topic, something we’ve noticed, or something you’ve asked us to discuss. This week we’re going to discuss ways you can damage your social media reputation and ways to prevent self-sabotage.

1. Personal rants

What else is Facebook there for, you might think. It’s a sounding board, where only the friends/trolls who are stalking you will chime in and argue or support. We beg to differ on the belief that your personal and professional Facebook or social media platforms are entirely separate.

If you are an entrepreneur:

Your life is blended. You are your business and your business is you. There is no separation. SO, when you rant about people consistently asking you for free work, or you complain about clients, or you rant with a close-minded (or really, any) perspective: WE ALL SEE IT. And though you might feel that you are fighting the crusade for other entrepreneurs, you are really just making yourself look bad, dramatic and an undesirable candidate with whom no one wants to engage on a professional level.

If you are part of a corporation:

You are a representative of your company, a paid brand ambassador. You make yourself look bad, you are making the company you work for look bad. The likelihood of them “catching” your bad behavior is possible, and even more so for someone who might be out to hire you in the future.

So, what should you do instead of ranting on social media?

  • Realize that owning a business is a roller coaster and it’s not for everyone
  • Understand that part of being a successful business owner means professionally handling conflict
  • Start an entrepreneur/other industry-related support group
  • Find positivity within the situation
  • Learn something about how to operate your business
  • Have empathy
  • Move on

Other don’ts:

  • Screenshot and shame competitors (or anyone, for that matter)
  • Air out dirty laundry from personal/professional relationships gone bad
  • Post negative content from the business account (or any account, really)

2. Lack of sensitivity

We’ll be the first to tell you that you should be scheduling on social media. We will also encourage you to be strategic, and over-monitor what you’ve scheduled and how it gets rolled out into real life. Why? Because poor timing can really hurt. Consider something you schedule and how it could be taken the completely wrong way when negative current events take place and what you’ve posted is now entirely insensitive. We found this example on Hire Rabbit

Screen Shot 2016-09-06 at 6.50.42 PM

In addition to the timeliness of your posts, we find it worth mentioning that you should not engage in jokes that are, well, not jokes at all. Sharing blatantly offensive material that YOU think is “funny” could cost you more than the 5 minutes it took you to craft the post. We all saw this post and how it went viral (and not in the good way)…of all the people in the entire world, a PR professional blew it with this one.

justine-sacco-hed-2013

Where is Justine Sacco now? Obviously this is a radical example, but it could be you. If it crosses your mind that something you find humorous MIGHT insult someone, don’t even post it.

For the sake of using a local example… RIP Waking Life. Story here.

3. How you engage

Oh, so you liked all of Donald Trump tweets and you accidentally followed the leader of the KKK because he followed you and you always follow back. People look at who you follow and who you engage with, especially when you first cross their radar and they are trying to gauge your brand’s credibility. That’s not to say that you cannot have a personal opinion on social media, it means that you have to have self-awareness and understanding that you are exposed by engaging on social media at all.

Beware that negative comments can crush you. No matter how upset you are at a poor Yelp review or negative tweet a customer shared, you have to stay positive and professional. Just because someone makes you feel bad or had a bad experience does not mean you should throw away the opportunity for them to give you a second chance. Moreover, that person’s word-of-mouth transfer to his/her friends upon you either fixing the issue and handling it in a professional way OR your bad attitude and mistreatment of his/her feedback can either uplift or ruin you. No one is perfect and as a person or brand on social media, we have to realize that it is a two-way street and negative and/or passive aggression will get you nowhere.

4. Avoid controversy

Stay away. We know how intriguing it is to jump in on a hot and trending political or religious issue. BUT we ask you to think twice and consider this: was ever a global/world issue solved through a Facebook/Instagram/LinkedIn post? Exactly. So, really, why bother? No matter what side you pick, you will polarize and turn someone off. Now, we realize you can’t work for everyone and you don’t want to… but if you can avoid controversy, social media will be a much more pleasant place, for you and your brand.

We’re not saying to be insensitive to what’s happening in the world, but revert back to the ways around ranting on #1 and move along. Also, there are plenty of ways to engage current events in a positive way. Here’s a Hubspot template that can help you design your SM Crisis Plan.

5. Not understanding the weight of social media for your brand

If you don’t understand how crucial social media is to your brand, and you pass it off to the intern because you don’t really care… or if you post silly/poorly crafted posts because you don’t see value in having a strategy, this one’s for you.

Social media is the most economical and “free” marketing tool. Why not pay attention to it? It’s the best way to give living, breathing characteristics to your brand and people LOVE when they can connect with brands on social media. So, why not pay attention and invest?

Even if the budget is small, there are plenty of ways to organically engage on social media and all that would cost is time. Once you get your bearings and start to see a return, invest a little more into ads and clicks. Then you’ll realize you’re growing your community and making money in a paid but still “human” way.

We recommend you put some stock in social media and don’t ignore it. Instead, make it work for you (and your brand).

Overall Do’s

  • Keep it positive, always
  • Take the conversation offline
  • Stay professional
  • And always, take the high road

#13ShadesofBlack: Meet Mckinna of House of Ceremony

Mckinna Hahn, House of Ceremony

I’m McKinna, I own and curate the shop, House of Ceremony in Charlotte, NC. HoC is vintage bridal that translates to the modern bride. It’s an eclectic shop with wedding dresses and bridal accessories, and soon to come vintage bridesmaids, lingerie and loungewear, all dating from the 1920’s to the 1980’s.

Vintage is what I sell, it’s also what I wear. I’m big on vintage denim and tee shirts. That’s usually my jam from day to day. At least in the summer. I’m fairly casual and I like to keep a low key comfort. Whether with my Adidas Gazelles or my booties. Black is my shade of choice. It’s when I feel like I’m in my element. (You’ll rarely see me in color or pattern.) Paired with my silver and turquoise jewels I collect from flea markets. Simple and casual, that’s my day to day. I wear what I like and I keep to my own style. And just how I buy for the shop, with a unique eye for beautifully classic pieces that still work for today’s cool chick. Trends will come and go but black is forever.

“I wear black on the outside ’cause black is how I feel on the inside” – Morrissey. Not sure if that fits the mantra of a bridal company, but we’re not your average bridal house.

You can find us on social media:

#13ShadesofBlack: Meet Lauren of Cut From The Same Cloth

Lauren Remesi, Cut From The Same Cloth

I’m Lauren, the incognito face (and hands) behind Cut From The Same Cloth. CFSC is a women’s clothing brand based here in NC (Concord). In a world crazed by fast fashion, we are what we like to call slow fashion. Everything is thought out, sketched, drafted, cut and sewn in our studio.

As a small child, I spent most of my time carefully curating Barbie outfits. Not much has changed, just now with people. Like most involved in fashion, I view clothing and the way we dress more as an art form than anything else. It very much expresses who we are or a mood we are in, and sometimes an image we want to portray.

“Why be boring and blend in when you can stand out and be different?” This is a motto I bear in mind when creating. I have never been a person to conform or be the norm. I have always gravitated and sought out the exact opposite. If everyone wore pink, I wore black (wink). I embody this way of life in my clothing because that’s who the typical CFSC girl is, essentially.

Cut From The Same Cloth was born in 2011 creating custom pieces for private clients. We got the customer involved with the design process, from sketch to final fit. Over the past few years we have evolved into creating small seasonal collections, while also collaborating with boutiques.

You can find CFSC at www.cutfromsamecloth.com. And the party doesn’t stop there. Come hang out with us for behind the scenes and inspiration on Instagram @cutfromsamecloth. If you are a brand or boutique looking to collaborate, email me: lauren@cutfromsamecloth.com.

#13ShadesofBlack: Meet Filipe of Ole Mason Jar

Filipe Ho, Ole Mason Jar

Who are you?

Filipe Ho

What company do you own/work with?

Co-Founder and COO of OLE MASON JAR, a Charlotte-based menswear brand dedicated to giving back and making high quality clothing and accessories right here in the USA.

How did you get engaged in fashion?

Honestly, I think it is something that has always been inside of me, an interest I have had my entire life. I was originally born in Hong Kong, and have been lucky enough to travel all over the world, so I think that is ultimately a major component of my strong interest. I also have had several family members in the industry that has inspired me, and they continue to mentor and provide guidance today.

If you had to brand your personal style, what would you call it?

Traditional modern (transitional) lol?. I frequently will pair something more trendy or modern, with a classic staple that is always in style. I am also big on versatile pieces, pairing things together and layering. I tend to wear something in a different way each time, and enjoy creating unique and different looks with only a handful of simplistic pieces.

Where can people find you/your business on social media?

Our showroom is located in historic Brevard court (148 Brevard Court), across from Romare Bearden Park and above Vahalla Wine Bar. Also, definitely check out our website www.olemasonjar.com and all of our social media (@olemasonjar on all platforms…instagram, facebook, twitter, pinterest, tumblr etc…

Where can people meet you #IRL (market, event, store, etc.), Etc.

Every Sunday @ Elevation uptown! 7 days a week at either Not Just Coffee, or Rush Espresso for my daily/multi daily coffee fix. Also, I am a huge fan of 7th street market, Sabor in Elizabeth or Noda and Reids over in Southpark (especially for Brunch!).

#13ShadesofBlack: Meet Caleb of Enemy To Fashion

Caleb Clark, Enemy To Fashion

I began in fashion when my cruel Illuminati overlords demanded it of me. My style is a 1970’s mercenary martian who has become tragically stranded on Earth.

Feel free to catch us red handed on Instagram or Snapchat @enemytofashion. You’ll never see me in real life, but trust me, I’ll see you.
