Local business owner Corri Smith is looking toward the next chapter.

Her public relations and marketing firm, Black Wednesday, faced a sharp drop in revenue in 2020. Its client portfolio was heavy on the food and beverage and hospitality industries, some of the hardest-hit sectors in the pandemic. Smith dug into her entrepreneurial mindset to pivot the business toward new clients and more potential profitability.

Black Wednesday is moving out of its approximately 1,700-square-foot space in NoDa effective March 31, with the staff continuing to work remotely. The move does not signal the firm’s end — Smith is quick to clarify that. Instead, it’s part of a previous, years-long goal to find a larger office with a more compartmentalized setup for employees.

Working remotely has been a challenge, Smith said, as her team thrives on collaboration. She said this move is not necessarily related to the pandemic, although it was tough to pay for an office no one was using. The goal is to transition back to the office this year.

Smith is now looking at options in west Charlotte between 2,200 and 2,800 square feet. She would like to move in this summer.
