Juneteenth is a significant holiday in the United States that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved Black people across the country.
Observed on June 19th, the day celebrates the date in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the end of the Civil War and the end of slavery—two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. The Texas town is widely considered the last area to have received the news of freedom.
Today, Juneteenth serves dual purposes: it’s a reminder of the long and difficult journey toward freedom and equality, and it’s also an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of Black people in the United States.
