THIS PAST SUMMER, screenwriting contest Scripted Charlotte selected a script by filmmaker Chris Baker to be made into a film. Baker received $12,000 to film T is for Tada, and next week, it’ll received the red carpet treatment in a premiere at Studio Movie Grill in uptown’s Epicenter. The event arrives on Oct. 25 at 6 p.m., with the screening starting at 7 p.m. and a Q&A to follow.
Baker and his crew had a 6-day shoot for the film. When asked insight on the story of T is for Tada, Baker says this: “It’s the story of three friends who decide to rob a magician, in the vein of the influential ’80s films of Steven Spielberg and Amblin Entertainment, like E.T. and The Goonies,” he writes.
The contest is sponsored by Wheelhouse Media and the Wheelhouse Foundation, a non-profit geared toward filmmaking resources for fellow charitable organizations. The call for screenplays last summer stipulated an original story that is no more than 20 pages. Other than the funding, Wheelhouse also offered production support throughout the course of filming.
Baker is an award-winning filmmaker based in Charlotte, where he’s worked on commercials, TV series, and full-length films. His own production group, Baker’s Dozen Films, is behind short films entered in contests across the country. His film The Hidden nabbed the top award at the 100 Word Film Festival in 2016.
