CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A new beer will be sold at NoDa and Plaza Midwood breweries to honor a business owner who was tragically killed in a robbery attempt at his family sandwich shop.
Early in the morning on Dec. 9, Scott Brooks was opening the restaurant for breakfast when he was shot and killed in a robbery attempt.
“He was a staple of this area. And you know, his burgers are what fueled the buildout of this place, half the lunch breaks were coming from him,” said Chad Henderson with NoDa Brewing.
Noda is now known for its breweries and beer scene, but for 40 years, Brooks’ Sandwich House has been a popular spot that attracted people to the area. Twin brothers David and Scott Brooks inherited the sandwich shop from their father who opened it in 1973.
Beginning at the end of February, a Pale lager which was Brooks’ favorite will be sold at every brewery in the area. It’s named after one of Scott Brooks’ favorite slogans: “Too blessed to be stressed.”
Every dollar the new beer makes will be given to Habit for Humanity.
“We need to do our part to kind of remember him in a positive light and to try and raise some money for a charity that would be near and dear to his heart,” said Henderson.
In 2019, the Brooks brothers donated 2.1 acres of land their father purchased years ago.
“We came together to support Scott Brooks and his family’s enormous impact on our neighborhood,” said Jason Alexander with Free Range Brewing.
Police are still looking for the people responsible and have released surveillance pictures of the men accused of shooting Brooks. There’s a $21,000 reward to find his killers.
