A new facility is rising in East Charlotte to provide mental health services for children and teens, addressing what one official called an “extreme shortage” in North Carolina.

With its 48 beds and urgent care unit, the Katie Blessing Center will treat patients struggling with issues ranging from eating disorders to trauma.

The center held a groundbreaking on Tuesday.

Tracey Hummell, chief operating officer, said the center is being called a “unicorn.”

“It’s the first of its kind,” she told QCity Metro. “We will have a range of services for kids as young as five up until eighteen.”
